Spring 2003
Beijing - Hong Kong - Honolulu
Robyn visited a trio of exciting cities during a three-week tour in January/February 2003. In Beijing, Robyn served as the cantor for the bar mitzvah of Benjamin Kaye. During the service, Benjamin recited a portion of the Sh'ma prayer in Chinese. Benjamin's mother, a jewelry designer, created a special mezuzah in his honor, etching the Chinese words onto a silver plaque around the Hebrew scroll.
Friends welcomed Robyn on her tenth visit to Hong Kong. She led Shabbat services for the United Jewish Congregation, presented a concert for the community and participated in a program for the religious school.
A full house assembled for Robyn's concert at Temple Emanu-El in Honolulu. Following the concert,
Robyn was presented with a lei and traditional "aloha" greetings.
Historic Butte Celebration
Congregation B'nai Israel, the oldest synagogue in Montana, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in May 2003. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building has been in continuous use since its establishment in 1903. Butte was home to about 500 Jewish families at the end of the 19th century. The city's first elected mayor was Jewish.
The Centennial Celebration will include Shabbat services, festive meals, and an evening concert with Robyn
for the Butte Jewish community (around 45 people) and special guests that will travel to Montana from across the
United States.
