Spring 2000The Lion Roars - The Dragon Stirs
The first major conference celebrating the Asian Jewish world culminated in a gala concert presented by Robyn Helzner and Dov Weitman. Representatives from congregations in Beijing, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel gathered in Hong Kong for the historic meeting. Robyn's winter residency with the United Jewish Congregation of Hong Kong coincided with the March conference. In addition to the concert, Robyn officiated as cantor for Shabbat services, led an evening kumsitz (sing-along), and conducted a workshop on the influence of Jewish music on Jewish identity.
Robyn Helzner Trio News
The Robyn Helzner Trio presented a featured performance at the UAHC's 65th Biennial Convention. Five thousand Reform Jews from across the United States and abroad attended the December 1999 conference in Orlando, Florida.
On January 16, 2000, the Trio performed at the first international conference, Life Reborn: Jewish Displaced Persons, 1945-1951. The Trio presented songs that emerged from the DP camps of Europe following World War II. The audience of survivors and their families danced an exuberant hora as the Trio played the DP composition, "Am Yisroel Khai" (the People of Israel Live).
The Jewish Educators Assembly invited the Trio to perform at their national conference on January 25. Leading educators from the Conservative movement gathered in Baltimore for the annual meeting. The Trio braved a fierce winter storm to reach the snow bound participants, giving new meaning to the term "captive audience".
On June 18, Robyn will sing at the International Association of Jewish Libraries book fair in Washington, DC.
In August, the Trio will bring their eclectic mix of world Jewish music to the 25th annual CAJE Conference in New York.
"We were touched beyond words at the outpouring of joy from the audience elicited by your performance."
