A Fire Burns in Uganda
Joab Jonabab (J.J.) Keki is a leader of the Abayudaya, a community that lives in eastern Uganda and practices Judaism. The Abuyadaya trace their Jewish roots to a Ugandan governor who adopted Judaism in 1919. Without a direct Jewish lineage, the Abayudaya are not considered halachic Jews. So, J.J. underwent a Conservative conversion in the United States. J.J. came to the U. S. to raise awareness of the Abayudaya among American Jews and to seek funds for Jewish education.
Although the Abayudaya live in rural villages that lack running water and electricity, they can play cassettes on battery powered recorders. In 1995, a representative of Kulanu, an organization "dedicated to finding lost and dispersed remnants of the Jewish people", visited the Abuyadaya and gave them Robyn's Clap Your Hands tape. J.J. will return home with a complete set of Robyn's recordings.
Clearly, a Jewish fire burns in the hearts and souls of the Abayudaya of Uganda.
Robyn Helzner Trio News
 Brith
Shalom Congregation in Houston, Texas enjoyed a memorable concert with the Trio in February 2001. Both the
Congregation's adult and youth choirs joined the Trio in the performance. The grand finale featured the
Trio, Cantors Steven and Elizabeth Berke and both choirs to debut an arrangement of the Israeli song, "Hine
Ba HaShalom - Peace is Coming." The stirring performance brought the audience to its feet.
In March,
the Trio performed at an event to honor hundreds of pre-school teachers, sponsored by the Board of Jewish Education
of Greater Washington. The rousing participation of the honorees throughout the concert confirmed that pre-school
teachers make the best audience!
Robyn, Dov
and Matt presented a featured performance at the North American Jewish Choral Festival in August. Over 600
participants attended the 12th annual conference. The audience of choral singers improvised their own harmony vocals
on several songs, which added a thrilling dimension to the Trio's acclaimed concert.
"I strongly recommend the Robyn Helzner Trio to any community interested in promoting Jewish identity through
music."
