Butte Bar Mitzvah

B'nai Israel Synagogue - Butte, MontanaAn ambassador of Jewish music, Robyn Helzner has performed in some unusual locations, including Moscow, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Fairbanks, Alaska and Maui, Hawaii. She even officiated at the first bar mitzvah in Beijing, China.

This summer, Robyn officiated at a bar mitzvah in Butte, Montana. In the 1880's, Butte was home to about 500 Jewish families. Butte's first elected mayor was Jewish, and the city was the center of Jewish life in the state. The August 2000 Bar Mitzvah was celebrated at the historic B'nai Israel Synagogue, built in 1903. The event was attended by Butte's current Jewish residents (about 45 people), and 160 out-of-town guests from across the U. S. and abroad. The guests filled the tiny shul with song and prayer, bringing the historic synagogue to life and connecting the assembled congregation to the hearty Jewish pioneers who helped settle the American west.

Robyn Helzner TrioThe Robyn Helzner Trio played to an overflow audience at the 25th Annual Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education held at Hofstra University in New York. Conference participants, dedicated to fostering Jewish education, gathered in August from across the U. S. and abroad.

While at CAJE, Robyn and Trio member Dov Weitman gave a "gold medal" performance at the American Zionist Movement's annual song competition. Teaming up with composer Shelley Orbach ("Or Shalom" on Robyn's Hearts Awaken recording), Robyn and Dov premiered their original arrangement of Shelly's new song, "Shir Ha'aretz Hamuvtachat - Song of the Promised Land." The song won first prize.

The Trio returns to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Sunday, November 19, 2000, to perform a joint concert with Mappamundi, a dynamic world folk and acoustic ensemble from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The event is co-sponsored by Temple Emanu-El and Trinity Episcopal Church. Temple Emanu-El presented the Trio in concert in Myrtle Beach in December 1999.
