Dov Weitman
Dov Weitman is a master of many musical trades, playing guitar, recorder, and mandolin, harmonizing, arranging, and writing songs for the Robyn Helzner Trio.
When Dov and Robyn began their musical collaboration in 1981, they clicked instantly - intuitively understanding the direction of each song they played together. They have been performing together ever since.
Weitman began his professional musical journey in Boston while attending Harvard Law School. In the 1970s, he sang and played with the Zamir Chorale of Boston and with New York Zamir. Since moving to Washington, D.C., Dov - a devoted environmentalist - has become a senior official with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Growing up, Dov's musical environment inspired him to master a new instrument virtually every year. He now counts the dobro, fiddle, bass, banjo and harmonica among the ten instruments he plays professionally. "Each instrument has a particular ‘voice’ that you can’t produce any other way," says Dov.
Trio members Robyn, Dov, and Matt Holsen do not merely rehearse musical pieces, but reinterpret them with careful thought and skillful collaboration. "When we get together, Robyn will suggest songs and sing the lead. At that point, we work hard on structure, harmonies, instrumental embellishments, and rhythms to capture the essence of the song. Our group introduces listeners to Jewish musical styles they may have never heard before."
Dov loves playing all types of music, having played professionally in rock and roll, blues, folk, and Spanish dance bands. But he is partial to playing Jewish music and realizes how fortunate he is to have found musicians who share his passion for this multi-faceted tradition.
